The real winners

By Sean

There is so much talk about the new online casinos that are going to open in America. In addition, there is a lot of talk about who will win the bits, software-wise, to power these hopeful money makers for any state that wants to get in on the action. There are those who feel that big business is going to win while others see it for what it is; a way for states to make money.

While the amount of money that states can earn is yet undetermined, it is a known fact that billions of dollars are leaving the country on a daily basis because of all the regulations and the former illegal ruling by the government. Now that this is all changing, we find that there are going to be many more winners besides the players.

Of course the operators will be one of them, in terms of taxes going to the states and the amount of money that is spent will remain in the United States. It remains to be seen what the officials actually do with the money. When big business gets involved, we could see a totally different landscape than what most are expecting. It is not hard to see that there are still a lot that is left to be determined.

With all the politics aside and all of the “what ifs” said and done, will these new casino ventures really be good for the everyday gambler? Hopefully it will and hopefully we will not see another fiasco, as some would call it, as we already do with the lottery. It has long been a suspicion that states do not do what they are supposed to do with the billions of dollars that is spend by citizens on what the intention was when they first began.

Hopefully we will see some tremendous transparency when it comes to where this money is being spent. Will it be spent on schools, medical care for the needy and the retired, or will it just go to the special interest groups to further causes that most people really don’t care about. Then we have the unions, who seem to want a cut in everything. Will they get a good chunk of it? People are already skeptical about how involved special interests and unions are in politics all over the world. Will gambling online further grow these problems and suspicions?

All of these questions will for the most part go unanswered until someone really presses the issue. Transparency is not really a strong suit of any administration in most countries. This is why private industry could be the best bet, even if it is big business being the winners. If there is one thing we know, we know that when big business wins jobs are created. When the government wins, people are on welfare. This is not to say that the government does not do some great things because they do. But job creation has never been their strong suit.

They say that gambling brings corruption. They also say that most governments are corrupt. Imagine what is going to happen when gambling and government meet. On the other hand, online casinos could just be the winning ticket for some much needed revenue but at this point, with so many unanswered questions, only time will tell.
